Dr Michael Mawson

Dr Michael Mawson is the Maclaurin Goodfellow Chair of the Faculty of Arts, Theological and Religious Studies at the University of Auckland.

As an undergraduate, he studied History and Religious Studies at Te Herenga Waka/ Victoria University of Wellington, before completing an MA in Religious Studies. He moved to the USA for doctoral studies in Theology and Ethics at the University of Notre Dame.

Before coming to Waipapa Taumata Rau in 2023, he worked at Aberdeen University in Scotland and then Charles Sturt University in Australia. Michael has a wide-ranging research interests in Theology and Religion, including in German theology (especially Dietrich Bonhoeffer), religion and politics, ageing and embodiment, environmental ethics, decolonisation, and contextual theologies in Aotearoa and the Pacific.
